Pregnancy Massage
Let me put to death a couple of old wives tales:
- Massage is
dangerous for pregnant women, and
- Massage should be avoided in the first
trimester.
In the hands of a therapist not trained in pregnancy massage there may
be unacceptable risks, however we are especially trained to provide massage to the pregnant woman. We are
aware of the risks and we manage them accordingly, in liason with your Doctor, if
necessary.
Massage does not cause spontaneous abortion and is quite safe under the hands
of a properly qualified therapist. A woman in her first trimester is undergoing considerable change and will
need just as much support in these first few months as she will throughout the balance of her pregnancy. We
provide that support.
We are well aware of the
high demands pregnancy places on a woman's body and how essential it is for
you to be nurtured at this time. Massage not only relieves the tensions and
discomfort caused by the extra weight and the shift in your body's centre of gravity, but it also reduces
swelling, calms the nervous system, reduces fatigue and enhances energy.
We understand that your
whole body is adapting to the new life growing within you and that you are facing many significant life changes.
We know you need and deserve support, your health and vitality has never been more important than it is
now. Massage is the perfect way to relax. You will be comfortably supported with pillows and cushions during your massage and in the
later stages of your pregnancy you will enjoy a complete massage supported on your side. At all times you will be appropriately draped.
Benefits
The physical changes of
pregnancy can be stressful; a soothing massage loosens tight muscles and
calms the nervous system. It increases circulation, carrying energy producing nutrients to your cells and
eliminating metabolic waste products that can cause fatigue. During your massage your body awareness becomes
more noticeable which means you can easily identify your tension areas and consciously release them. Results you
may expect to notice include;
• Reduction of fluid
retention
• Relief of headaches
caused by stress, excess toxins, and constipation
• Relief of muscular and
joint pain caused by supporting extra weight
• Decrease progress of
varicose veins with enhanced circulatory
stimulation
• Release of abdominal
soreness caused by baby's kicks
• Moisturising of the skin to aid in the prevention of stretch
marks
Our experienced specialist
practitioners are able to assist you in preparing for the birth of your baby. Regular massage to the lumbar,
abdomen and the inner thigh areas will release chronic pressure for negligible resistance during the birth.
Whilst being massaged, by consciously focusing on releasing tension in these areas, you will increase your
confidence and control during labour.
Postpartum
It is as essential to care
for yourself in the postpartum weeks following the birth of your baby as it is during your pregnancy. Massage
assists in the healing of your body by increasing circulation, promoting relaxation and gently coaxing your body
back to its original shape.
